The high school softball and baseball playoffs are in full force and a few area teams are still in the running for a state championship.

Softball

Marcus and Guyer started a three game series on Wednesday for the 6A Division II Region I championship.

The Wildcats took game one by a score of 9-4 at The Colony High School.

It’s a rematch from last year’s regional quarterfinal, which Guyer won. During the regular season, the two teams faced each other twice. Each team won one game and they were both decided by one run.

Marcus head coach Christy Tumilty said after game two of the regional semifinal that playing in one of the hardest districts in the state has prepared them for anything, and anyone, in the playoffs.

Marcus beat Keller in three games and Guyer, down to its last strike, came from behind to beat Mansfield Legacy.

The winner of the series will advance to the state semifinals.

Flower Mound swept Odessa Permian out in Clyde in the Regional Semifinal. Now, the Lady Jags are set to face Plano East for the 6A Division II Region I championship.

All games will be played at L.D. Bell High School. Game one is Thursday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the series will advance to the state semifinals.

Baseball

Marcus and Guyer have the chance to face up in the 6A Division II Region I baseball championship, as well.

The Marauders are facing Byron Nelson in the regional semifinal round. They beat Dallas Jesuit in three games to get there.

Game one will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Byron Nelson High School.

Guyer is facing powerhouse Southlake Carroll. The Wildcats swept Richardson’s J.J. Pearce High School in the regional quarterfinals. Game one will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Southlake Carroll High School.

Whoever wins in each of these series will face each other in the Region I championship. If Marcus and Guyer both advance, it will match the softball regional final matchup.

Another Lewisville ISD school is in the 6A Division I playoff bracket.

The Hebron Hawks are set to face Keller in the regional semifinal. The winner will face the winner of Mansfield Legacy and Prosper.

The winner will advance to the regional finals.

In 5A Division II, Argyle is set to face Lubbock-Cooper in the regional semifinal.

The Eagles swept Mansfield Timberview in the regional quarterfinal, continuing their road to state.

If Argyle can pull out another series win, it will secure its spot in the regional final against either Wylie or defending state champion Grapevine.

Game one will be played Thursday at 7 p.m. at Abilene Christian University.

At its April meeting, Northlake Town Council approved to split Cleveland-Gibbs Road into two different roads: Cleveland Road and Gibbs Road. It comes with the impending bridge realignment that will direct Mulkey Street over I-35W, instead.

Two of the three sections were approved, with one section still under discussion

Cleveland-Gibbs Road was named after the two families the road connected. The Gibbs family lived to the west of what is now I-35W and the Cleveland family to the east.

The Town’s proposal names the northern part of the road Gibbs Road.

The southern part of the road will be Cleveland Road.

Town Council’s current plan has a goal to fix a downed bridge where the black circle is on the image to the right and stops Cleveland Road at the red dot.

The council had trouble finalizing a name for the third section, which is south of the intersection of Sam Lee Lane and Dale Earnhardt Way, near Highway 114.

The surrounding roads and section to the south will remain unchanged until the council returns to the issue at its next meeting on May 22.

Beginning Wednesday, July 9, AMC Movie Theatres across the country will be offering tickets at half price every Wednesday, according to a press release.

The price decrease is in an effort to “make movies more affordable and accessible for guests,” said the announcement.

“50% Off Wednesdays” will be available to all AMC Stubs members, which is free to join with an AMC Stubs Insider membership. Ticket fees and other premium charges for enhanced experiences like IMAX will still apply, but the base ticket price will be 50% off.

“At AMC, we’ve gone to great lengths to create the preeminent moviegoing environment at our AMC theatres including our offering more comfortable seating, more premium formats and better food and beverage offerings,” said AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron. “Now, we also are pleased to make moviegoing more affordable.”

The cinema industry has faced challenges in the recent years with the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in streaming services, but AMC’s move indicates there has been a recent uptick in business.

“Realistically, we could not afford to have made this change to our ticket pricing strategy until the box office showed true signs of sustained recovery,” said Aron. “But in April and now in May, the box office has been booming and the remainder of 2025 appears poised to continue that upward box office trend.”

Anyone who is not currently an AMC Stubs Insider member can sign up for free through the app, on the AMC website or at their local theatre.

The closest AMC Theatre to southern Denton County is AMC Highland Village 12, located in The Shops at Highland Village.

Several years ago, AMC Theatres introduced Discount Ticket Tuesdays, which it will continue alongside the Wednesday deal.

“The introduction of Discount Tuesdays several years ago has turned Tuesday into one of the best attended days of the week, in part because there is a segment of the moviegoing audience who looks first for a great value in their moviegoing,” said Aron. “With the introduction of 50% off Wednesdays, we’re looking to turn Wednesday into a similar strong-attendance day for moviegoers at our theatres.”

To see what movies are showing at AMC Highland Village, and to buy tickets, visit its website.

At its May meeting, Flower Mound Town Council unanimously passed an ordinance that addresses the use of bicycles and scooters around the Town. It will go into effect the first week of June.

“Thinking about school getting out, this should give everyone a good month to get all the safety equipment like helmets and everything needed,” said JP Walton, chief strategic officer for Town of Flower Mound.

The first part of the ordinance talks about helmet use. The Town decided any children, defined as kids 14 years old or younger, will be required to wear a helmet while riding bikes or micro mobility devices.

According to the ordinance, micro mobility devices “refer to the range of small, lightweight vehicles or devices incapable of operating at a top-assisted speed faster than 28 mph and driven by one person. These devices may include, but are not limited to, electric motor-assisted scooters, electric skateboards, Segways, hoverboards, skateboards with one or more wheels or similar devices. Gas-powered devices are not included in this definition.”

The ordinance also specifies that it is “unlawful for a parent to allow a child to operate a bicycle or micromobility device on a public way or on public property within the town in violation of this article.” This means parents will be the ones that have to pay the fine when their child is found violating the ordinance.

The next part of the ordinance addresses nighttime, which is defined as 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. Both bicycles and micro mobility devices must have a white light on the front that can be seen from 500 feet away and a red reflective device on the back that can be seen by vehicles.

Next, the ordinance prohibits anyone on a bicycle or a micro mobility device from using mobile devices such as phones or tablets. In addition, riders cannot use headphones, earbuds or any other devices that could impair their hearing and prevent them from hearing approaching vehicles.

Anyone on a bicycle or micro mobility device must yield the right of way to pedestrians and, in the case they need to pass a pedestrian, must slow down and give them an audible warning.

On the first violation, the offender will be fined no more than $50, but will have the chance to get that money refunded if they show proof of completing the Flower Mound Police Department’s micro mobility safety course within 90 days.

“The court will give the offender the information,” said Police Chief David Coulon. “So, when you go in to pay the ticket, they will say how to get the micro mobility [safety course].”

Repeat offenders could face fines up to $100.

Denton County Commissioner’s Court proclaimed May 2025 to be Mental Health Awareness Month to address the complex mental health needs of children and families in the county.

The court also proclaimed May 8 to be Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.

“Although we’re observing one month and one day, it should be everyday and every month, we know it,” said Denton County Judge Andy Eads. “It calls upon all of us to be a part of this challenge to look for signs of people needing help.”

The proclamation said addressing mental health needs of the community is fundamental to the future of Denton County.

It cited records that show that 29 percent of children have been diagnosed with a mental health condition and 48 percent of parents have experienced difficulty accessing necessary mental health treatment.

“There is a strong body of research that supports the civic that all Americans could use to better handle challenges and protect their overall health and well-being,” said Eads during the proclamation.”

Denton County Commissioner Edmondson’s newsletter provided a couple of groups that serve the community regarding mental health.

United Way of Denton County and Cook Children’s Center for Community Health both have community partnerships and prevention-based approaches that serve children and adolescents by addressing their mental health needs and those of their families.

“We’re grateful for this proclamation and for helping us bring awareness to mental health issues,” said Emily Russell, a program coordinator in the Cook Children’s Health Care system. “It helps educate about resources available in our community.”

For more urgent matters, call the Denton County Crisis Hotline at 1-800-762-0157 or the National Suicide and Crisis hotline at 988, which is available 24 hours per day in English and Spanish.

The Marcus Marauders rallied in the sixth inning, getting within one run of the Keller Indians, but it was too little, too late. They dropped game two of the regional semifinal 4-3.

The Indians tied the series, so a winner-take-all game three will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m to see who faces the Denton Guyer Wildcats, who rallied late to beat Mansfield Legacy 6-5.

Marcus head coach Christy Tumilty gave credit to Keller’s starting pitcher Avery Lawton, who shut down the Marauder offense over six innings.

She only had three strikeouts, but forced Marcus to hit the ball on the ground, leading to 15 ground outs.

“She was doing a much better job today than she started out yesterday,” said Tumilty. “So, she just had better stuff and it took us a while to make those adjustments.”

Those adjustments came in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Marcus strung together a couple hits that included a groundout from second baseman Brianna Barr that scored Karli Burgess for the Marauders’ first run.

In the sixth, Marcus started another rally when its first three hitters reached base.

Center fielder Ella McNeil led off the inning with a walk. Shortstop Emily Souders followed that up with a single that advanced McNeil to third.

Keller turned the ball over to Claire Boggs, who allowed two runners she inherited to score.

First baseman Brynnan Wilhite hit a single, scoring McNeil and sending Souders to third and making it a 4-2 ballgame. After a walk from Myleene Olguin, Burgess hit a groundball that led to an out, but scored Souders, bringing the deficit to just one run.

A pair of fly ball outs killed the Marauders’ rally, but gave them a chance in the seventh to tie or take the lead.

Marcus got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, forcing Keller to strand a runner on third base, but couldn’t put any runs on the board in the seventh.

Keller brought Lawton back in to close out the game, setting the Marauders down in order.

However, the boost in offense gave Tumilty and the team some confidence going into game three.

“We’re feeling really good, especially how we were putting runs on the board in the sixth inning,” she said. “We were still making noise, had a lot of energy and I love how the kids are staying in it and responding as we need to.”

Marcus got into a 3-run hole after the first inning when Keller scored three runs on back-to-back home runs from Mackenna Jackson and Kaiya Fabela.

That was starter Chloe Poteete’s only inning of work. She was relieved by Bella Valdez, who kept the Marauders in the game by holding Keller to just one run through the last five innings and tallying two strikeouts.

“She did an amazing job, a really amazing job,” said Tumilty on Valdez’s performance. “Keller is a great hitting team and Bella did a great job to come in and only give up one run.”

Keller added its fourth run, and what ended up being the deciding factor, in the third inning on a triple from Carley Genzer that missed being a home run by about a foot. She scored on a Madison Eads’s triple.

The Marauders can still make the regional finals against Guyer, but it will take all three games. For now, Tumilty said the team is focused on the next day.

“Our kids are ready,” she said. “We have to get it done now, but if we can get it done here, we’re ready for whoever we have in the next round.”

The deciding game three will start at 2 p.m. at Byron Nelson’s Bobcat Stadium.

David Shipp represented MHS Planning+Design, the firm in charge of designing the park’s improvements.

The park is right off of Timber Creek Road.

Resident Patricia Fager’s house backs up to Timber Creek Road and she said she worries about the extra traffic that come with the extra amenities. She said it might overcrowd the small community.

“If you put more tennis courts and elaborate stuff, it’s going to drive more traffic down Timber Creek,” she said. “And parking is another concern, so I would appreciate if y’all would take that into consideration.”

Resident David Youngblood said he was concerned with the extra tennis courts and hoped there could be some more variety of courts or fields, since the park already has tennis courts. He also commented on the playground design.

“I have three children, so I believe a larger playground would be a benefit,” he said. “But, overall I think it’s exciting and I look forward to it.”

Both Fager and Youngblood said they hoped to see improved lighting on Timber Creek Road incorporated into the plans.

“Y’all listened very well and made adjustments and it looks great,” said board member Rick Kenyon. “There are some things we should talk about when it comes to actually designing it, especially the educational pieces, but you brought good designs, we talked through them, so in my mind, it’s perfect.”

Another speaker at the public hearing said it would be nice to preserve some of the natural features of the area “to enrich the ecology,” which might help serve the youth in an educational way.

She talked about features that could provide information on native plants and wildlife.

Kenyon said those would be good features to add in as the park is actually designed.

As of now, the item is planned to go to Flower Mound Town Council at the May 19 meeting. Updates can still be made to the final design.

HB 2, which includes $7.7 billion worth of funding for Texas public schools, just passed the Texas House and has been referred to the Education K-16 committee in the Senate, where it is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday.

As proposed by the House, the bill will include an increase in the basic allotment of funds, so each public district in the state will be given $6,555 per student.

The current basic allotment is $6,160 per student, which hasn’t changed since the 2019-20 school year.

In addition, the bill includes an automatic raise for teachers across the state and more funding for special education programs.

The increased funding hopes to “to increase the number of qualified and appropriately credentialed special education staff, including special education teachers, special education paraprofessionals, evaluation personnel, certified interpreters, board-certified behavior analysts, registered behavior technicians” and others.

Fund Schools First has set up a site for constituents to share their support for the bill. It has a message template that can be used for an email and lists phone numbers for the offices of the Chair of the Finance Committee, Senator Joan Huffman, and the Chair of the Education Committee, Brandon Creighton.

Senator Tan Parker serves on the Senate Finance Committee and represents Argyle ISD, Lewisville ISD and Northwest ISD.

His office can be reached at 512-463-0112.

Representative Brad Buckley filed the bill on February 20. It went through a plethora of steps before getting passed onto the Senate on April 23.

To read the full bill, visit the Texas Legislature website. For more information on public school funding, visit Fund Schools First’s website.

Calls or emails of support for the bill should be sent in by Monday.
