Michelle and Rene Torres missed the food from the New York City/New Jersey area. When they couldn’t find it in North Texas, they decided to start their own food truck, and just a short time later, they’ve got one restaurant open in Denton and are already considering opening more.

Michelle said she and her husband had both been born and raised in the Tri-State area, but in 2021 they made a “big faith move” to south Denton with their four young children. Rene wanted to work in roofing, but found it wasn’t for him, and he started looking for other career paths.

“We never thought in a million years that we’d be selling hot dogs, but one day, we couldn’t find hot dogs like what we grew up eating. Nothing was the same,” Michelle said. “He came up with an idea to bring that food here, all on a whim, and I thought it was a great idea.”

They got their own food truck, found suppliers from New York to make authentic New York hot dogs with red onions, spicy mustard and sauerkraut, and they named the business Brooklyn Dawgs. Customers can get big, authentic grilled dogs, regular or spicy, with a variety of toppings, as well as curly fries, New York cheesecake, and more.

The food truck quickly became a popular stop in southern Denton County neighborhoods like Pecan Square and at local events.

“There was this one huge event in Denton, our line was a mile long,” Michelle said. “I swear it had to be a mile long. Word was getting out.”

The food truck was popular, but limited, so they started thinking about opening a storefront. Last summer, they did just that, right next to the University of North Texas campus.

“It’s been really good, we have regulars now,” she said. “When people find out we’re there, they get excited.”

Breakfast was also recently added to the menu, with New York breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos and coffee being served from 8-11 a.m. on weekdays. Michelle said the restaurant will continue to expand its menu, with hopes of also expanding its North Texas footprint.

“We hope to open more in the future, just trying to master this spot,” she said.

Brooklyn Dawgs is located at 119 Ave. A in Denton. Click here for more information.

Brandon Gill, a Flower Mound resident and freshman Republican U.S. Representative for Texas’ 26th District, said he will file a bill to replace the likeness of Benjamin Franklin with that of President Donald Trump on the $100 bill.

“President Trump could be enjoying his golden years golfing and spending time with his family,” Gill told Fox News Digital. “Instead, he took a bullet for this country and is now working overtime to secure our border, fix our uneven trade relationship with the rest of the world, make America energy independent again, and put America first by ending useless foreign aid.”

Gill said he wants the change to happen once Trump’s current term ends in 2029. It would be 100 years after the last time a U.S. banknote was changed this way, when Andrew Jackson replaced Grover Cleveland on the $20 bill, according to Newsweek. The $100 bill has featured Franklin since 1914.

It is against federal law to use a living person’s likeness on a U.S. banknote.

On Nov. 10 around 12:30 a.m., a tractor-trailer worth $150,000 was stolen from the 700 block of Lakeside Parkway. It was later recovered in Dallas.

On the morning of Nov. 10, a man reported that his Dodge Charger worth $31,000 was stolen from the 2200 block of Zenith Avenue. There was broken windshield glass on the ground where the car had been parked. It was later recovered in Kaufman County and a suspect was arrested.

On Nov. 21 at 2:38 p.m., a 30-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a 33-year-old man through his open car window and preventing him from leaving in the 6000 block of Morriss Road. When the victim exited his vehicle to defend himself, the suspect reportedly attempted to run him over.

On Dec. 7 at 7:45 p.m., a 51-year-old man was pulled over for driving without his headlights on in the 1200 block of Timber Creek. The man showed signs of intoxication and refused sobriety tests and a blood draw. He became verbally and physically aggressive, and had to be restrained by three officers at the hospital. The following is a summary of recent incident reports made to the Argyle Police Department as compiled by the staff of The CTG:

On Dec. 19, a store employee on FM 407 reported that a man tried to buy $2,000 in Apple gift cards using a PayPal debit card with a different name, and he’s done this before. The employee, believing the man to be either committing fraud or the victim of fraud, asked the man if he knew where the money was going and the man said, “I have a friend, don’t worry about it.”

On Dec. 21, a lost runner jogged into the police department on Hwy 377, admitting their workout had made a wrong turn. They requested a ride back to Lantana, and an officer kindly stepped in—proving once again that law enforcement is always willing to go the extra mile (even if you can’t).

On Jan. 1, a caller reported seeing a young male subject sitting on a wooden trunk on FM 407 in front of CVS “hunched over like a teenager.” An officer responded and gave the subject a ride.

On Jan. 2, a concerned caller reported a mysterious figure in the 5T Ranch park—a young man described as banging a drum while sporting a “Phantom of the Opera” mask. A responding officer tracked down the percussionist, only to find a dedicated young drummer practicing for a tryout. His plan to disturb fewer people by moving from his backyard to the park had backfired. As for the eerie mask? It had vanished into the night, much like the Phantom himself.

On Jan. 15, a woman reported that as she was about to leave the Chick-fil-A parking lot, an elderly man opened her car door and got in her vehicle. He looked very confused and got out and stood next to her car as she left. An employee told an officer they saw the man eventually find his wife and friend and left with them.

On Jan. 16, a resident on Stonecrest Road reported seeing a peacock strutting around their backyard and they feared it might be an escaped pet. An officer explained that this was nothing to get their feathers ruffled about—it was normal behavior for the peacock. So the caller said they would simply “enjoy the peacock sighting.”

On Jan. 20, a restaurant manager on Hwy 377 called police after an ex-employee—who is banned from the property—found a creative way to stir up trouble. The former worker ordered a pizza under a fake name, then texted the manager, asking if someone could kindly deliver it to him so he wouldn’t violate his criminal trespass order. As a bonus, he also sent the manager a heartfelt “Happy Anniversary” text, marking one year since his firing. An officer soon found the ex-employee lurking nearby and advised him to find a new pizza joint—because at this rate, the only thing he’d be getting delivered was more legal trouble.

The Corinth Police Department on Thursday warned residents in a social media post about a new scam involving crash reports.

“A citizen, who was recently involved in a crash, advised she was contacted by a crash report company who told her the other vehicle’s insurance company was assuming complete responsibility,” the department said in a statement. “They gave her a website to go ‘get her report.’ The citizen said she went to the site and found much of her personal identifying information on the report.

“The officer who spoke to the citizen found this to be suspicious, and researched the website,” the department continued. “A quick search of the website revealed that this is a potential scam, as it pulls information from the state’s crash report. That report has personally identifying information such as driver’s license number, date of birth and address.”

If you get a similar call, the scammer may claim to be from carcrashreport.org and ask for details about the accident.

“It’s important to note that these calls are not from a law enforcement agency,” Corinth PD said. “If you’re involved in an accident and need an accident report, you should submit a formal request through TxDOT!”

The faces on the Flower Mound Town Council won’t change as the lone challenger withdrew from the race, according to Flower Mound’s town secretary.

In the May 3 General Election, Places 1 and 3 are expiring. Both incumbents — Adam Schiestel and Brian Taylor, respectively — filed for re-election, and only Taylor drew a challenger: Justin DeFillippo.

On Tuesday, DeFillippo submitted his certificate of withdrawal from the race. It was past the official withdrawal deadline, but election law allows candidates to withdraw if it is before the election equipment test notice, which it was. Schiestel and Taylor will automatically begin new three-year terms in May.

This doesn’t mean Flower Mounders won’t head to the polls in May, though. In February, the Town Council called a $112 bond election to fund parks, recreational facilities and street projects. Click here for more information about that.
