Three decades ago, a bomb exploded in downtown Oklahoma City in a devastating act of hatred, killing 168 people, including 19 children, and leaving hundreds more injured. It sadly stands as one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in United States history.

A DAY I WILL NEVER FORGET

I remember this day well. My daughters were in kindergarten and second grade while my commercial airline pilot husband was flying to Europe. I was sitting at home alone, drinking my morning coffee while watching television. Suddenly, a news alert announced a bombing at a federal building in Oklahoma City. I gasped, hearing this unbelievable news. My heart stopped as I tried to process what I was hearing. No one knew exactly what was going on, other than there was a horrific bombing at the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. There was mass chaos and confusion. The television images were gut-wrenching. I felt sick to my stomach just thinking about what was transpiring and all the innocent victims. My mind was racing as we were just over two hours directly south of Oklahoma City in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Would we be the next target?

Due to his flight schedule, I was unable to contact my husband, so I contacted my mother in Mississippi. We agreed that it was a good idea to get my girls out of school to ensure their safety. It was such a scary time, and 30 years later, I still get emotional thinking about it. What was happening? Things like this don’t happen in America, especially in the heartland…or do they?

30th ANNIVERSARY REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

Oklahoma City has been commemorating the 30th anniversary with events throughout April. These community events honor those who were killed, those who survived, and those who were changed forever. There is a 30th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony Saturday, April 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Memorial at 620 N Harvey Avenue downtown Oklahoma City.

The 30th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony will be held outside on the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial (weather permitting). Former President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will include 168 moments of silence, a reading of the names of those killed, and remarks from survivors, family members, and community leaders. This is NOT a ticketed event. Following the Ceremony, the Memorial Museum will be open free of charge thanks to Cox Community Day.

OKC MEMORIAL MARATHON

The month-long events end with the 2025 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, which will take place April 25-27. A Health & Fitness Expo will open on Friday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The 5K, Kids Marathon, and Senior Marathon will be held on Saturday, April 26. The primary races, including the Marathon, Half Marathon, and Quarter Marathon, will be held on Sunday, April 27, starting at 6:30 a.m.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is a signature OKC event bringing together athletes and spectators from all over the world to honor those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever by the tragic events of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. It is an excellent analogy of the character of these people, the history of their trials and difficulties, and how this city has overcome and persevered.

Several marathon legends will participate this year. Be sure to visit the Legends Booth at the expo, where you can meet these incredible athletes, hear their stories, and get a race poster or one of their books signed. One of the Running Legends that grabbed my attention is Dan Little of Madill, Oklahoma. Little has a big record as the oldest person to complete a World Marathon Challenge. That’s seven marathons, in seven days, on seven continents!

PERSONAL ACCOUNTS

Many people involved in the bombing were interviewed and videoed for this momentous occasion, making up ‘30 Stories of Light’ as a nod to the 30th anniversary. These personal videos take us back to April 1995 when legendary football coach Barry Switzer and his Super Bowl-winning Dallas Cowboys visited Oklahoma City. Alongside Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Coach Switzer brought the team to the bombing site to honor and lift the spirits of the first responders. Coach Switzer used this visit to teach his players about the impact of violence and the incredible display of teamwork from all first responders. The visit was deeply personal—Coach Switzer’s close friend and former player, Mickey Maroney, was killed in the bombing. Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who led the team to three Super Bowl victories, also had a connection: his sister, Tammy Powell, was a nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital during the aftermath.

SACRED GROUND

Through impactful exhibits and cutting-edge interactive displays, the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum carries you through the chronological story beginning the morning of April 19, 1995. What started as a beautiful spring morning quickly turned to chaos and confusion. Follow the journey all the way through the justice process, including the hope and healing evolving from the tenderness of the response and the harsh lessons learned that changed Oklahomans’ and Americans’ lives forever.

The Memorial Museum’s hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 12 noon to 5 p.m. Attend guided National Park Ranger Memorial tours for pre-scheduled groups from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Memorial is an affiliate of the National Park Service.

There is a fee to enter the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum. The Outdoor Symbolic Memorial is free and open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Outdoor Symbolic Memorial symbolizes the impact of unthinkable violence. It is a sobering place of quiet reflection, honoring victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were changed forever on that fateful day 30 years ago. The memorial encompasses the now-sacred soil where the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building once stood, capturing and preserving forever the place and events that changed the world.

STUNNING, SIMPLY STUNNING

The Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum is so well done. The museum does an outstanding job of telling the story of bravery, heartbreak, kindness, and compassion. It truly moves you to see how unthinkable and uncontrollable anger manifests itself and how a tragedy of this magnitude can bring out the very best of mankind. Everyone should visit this Museum and Memorial. The Oklahoma City Memorial is ranked #1 of 119 things to do in Oklahoma City, according to TripAdvisor Travelers as of April 2025.

“Our community, state, and nation were forever changed on April 19, 1995. As the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum reflects on the impact of that day 30 years ago, it continues its work to bring light to darkness.” – Kari Watkins, Oklahoma City Memorial Museum President & CEO

Buffalo is one place I never expected to visit. I only knew its beloved Buffalo Bills football team and Buffalo Wings.

But then I learned something new as I read Texas Monthly magazine. It had named the city’s Southern Junction restaurant among “The Best Places in the USA to Get Texas BBQ (Outside of Texas).” Hmmm. As it happened, we’d been planning a trip to Niagara Falls, and to get there, we’d fly into Buffalo. This was my chance to check out this city — and for this Texas girl to check out the notorious BBQ joint.

As I researched our trip to Buffalo, much to my surprise, I found countless fascinating attractions and an intriguing hotel that piqued my interest. Buffalo has a vibrant global food scene and unexpected examples of elevated art and culture. It also possesses rich historical sites, including architectural masterpieces, an improbable presidential inauguration site, a historic floating museum, and exquisite stained-glass windows.

We packed our bags and flew north.

Southern Junction, a Texish Smokehouse

Visit Buffalo Niagara)

Chef Ryan Fernandez, born in India and raised in Dallas, is one of Buffalo’s rising stars and has earned the culinary world’s attention as a James Beard Finalist for 2024 Best Emerging Chef and James Beard Semifinalist for 2025 Best Chef: New York State. The Best Chef winner has yet to be announced as of this writing. Chef Ryan’s crazy marriage of Texas BBQ and Indian cuisine has given birth to an entirely new flavor profile, one he calls “Texish.”

Started as a culinary incubator, Southern Junction is the only South Indian–Texas BBQ restaurant in the USA. It’s located on Buffalo’s West Side, and long lines are the norm, even if you show up around 4:30 p.m. opening time. While waiting in line, my appetite grew as I inhaled the aromatic smoke from the fire-licked meats.

As you enter Southern Junction, you are transported deep in the heart of Texas with rustic aesthetics and décor from the Lone Star state. It includes a full bar, dining room, and patio seating. Customers order the delectable smoked meats and sides at the chopping station. Selections are placed on a paper-lined tray, the quintessential way Texas BBQ is served.

After my first bite of Texish food, I was hooked. It was like nothing I’d ever eaten, a new awakening for my Southern taste buds. This unique combination of Texas BBQ and South Indian flavors transformed classic dishes into something extraordinary.

The Barbacurry Beef, with its rich, spicy marinade, melded the smoky tenderness of Texas brisket with the vibrant warmth of Indian spices. The Chammandhi Slaw, a refreshing twist on traditional coleslaw, brought in fresh herbs that perfectly balanced the Indian spices. The Serrano Mac and Cheese added a spicy kick that was both comforting and bold, while the Cardamom Cornbread offered a sweet, satisfying finish.

With his Texas BBQ skills and clever fusion of South Indian flavors, Chef Ryan Fernandez has reimagined Texas BBQ in a way that excites the palate and honors both culinary traditions.

As familiar as the Texas BBQ experience is to me, I quickly noted that this entire set-up is a novelty to many upstate New Yorkers in the restaurant. They loved it, and I enjoyed watching customer’s reactions as they dug into their Texish treats. I’ve never seen diners so excited about what they were eating. And I was one of them.

Beef on Weck is Buffalo’s favorite regional dish. This signature sandwich predates Buffalo Chicken Wings by decades. For those who are unfamiliar, as I was, it’s a carved roast beef sandwich served on a unique, salty kimmelweck roll. Depending on which source you trust, this food came to the area either with German immigrants or from a food stand at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. Regardless of how the sandwich reached Western New York, it’s been a staple here for over a century.

Also originating locally is Buffalo-style pizza. I was amazed at the offerings of cup-and-char pepperoni, the tripled mozzarella, and the doubled semi-sweet sauce that tops the sourdough crust. The sauce runs right to the edge. Locals order the pies “well done” to ensure the crust and meat have the requisite char. Buffalo-style pizza has been a relative secret, but that’s starting to change. Travel + Leisure Magazine recently named Buffalo one of America’s favorite cities for pizza.

The Historic Richardson Hotel

The stately, historic Richardson Hotel. (Photo by Terri Guthrie)

Every historic hotel has a story, but the Richardson Hotel’s might beat them all. This National Historic Landmark building opened in 1880 and was once the New York State Asylum for the Insane. When built, it was a state-of-the-art facility implementing the most modern ideas in psychiatric treatment.

In the heart of Buffalo, this colossal, ten-wing Romanesque building is slowly being resurrected after being closed for over 50 years. The Richardson opened its doors in 2023 and is a destination for those who embrace the human spirit and its stories. Set on over 40 acres in the Elmwood Village neighborhood, this National Historic Landmark Hotel offers a surreal and exciting experience. Occasionally, I shuddered while lying in my luxury bed, thinking, “If these walls could talk….”

With its upscale décor and modern amenities, but massive corridors and soaring windows from the original asylum, it’s one of the most memorable hotels I’ve ever experienced. And yes, I did get a good night’s rest.

We had a behind-the-scenes hard-hat tour of areas that have yet to be renovated. My first thought as I surveyed the sprawling asylum wings in utter disarray was what a monumental undertaking this is. The sheetrock hung in tattered remnants from the walls; the ceiling sagged, exposing tangled pipes and wires. It all made me wonder: where do you even begin to renovate a place like this?

Guests can get the full story of this extraordinary complex on the ground floor at the Lipsey Architecture Center, which introduces the original design dream team — the asylum’s visionaries. Henry Richardson is the famed architect who designed this iconic building. The massive grounds were the work of landscape architect Fredrick Olmsted, who designed New York City’s Central Park.

The facility and protocol for more humane treatment for the mentally ill was the concept of Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a physician and mental health advocate. Together, these three American innovators changed the course of history for the care and treatment of mental illness. I presume these three men could never have imagined this asylum would one day become a swanky hotel.

Historic Attractions Abound In Buffalo: Buffalo AKG Art Museum

The AKG Art Museum is a destination all by itself. A stunning $200 million donation allowed the reinvention of the former Albright-Knox Art Gallery with, among other things, a 50,000-square-foot addition. I thought the new building itself was a work of art. With its sweeping park views, the addition emerges from the lawn like a fantastic ice floe made of glass. The gallery’s three-story sheer glass walls offer giant windows to the world, welcoming everyone to come and explore.

After a three-and-a-half-year construction closure, a new name was introduced when it reopened in 2023. Buffalo AKG Art Museum honors the names of funders Albright, Knox, and Gundlach. As the doors opened, it generated community excitement, international interest, and great success. Within the first months of its reopening, it had drawn 100,000 visitors.

The AKG features a world-renowned range of art, from old masters to the most contemporary. I enjoyed a docent-led tour and saw the evolution of modern and contemporary art through the works of Picasso, Van Gogh, Pollack, and Warhol. The Wall Street Journal cites the AKG as “a required stop for cultural travelers.”

Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site was one of my favorite stops. Who knew he took the Presidential Oath of Office in Buffalo? As a huge fan of Teddy Roosevelt, I knew I had to see this National Historic Site.

It documents the unfortunate events that led to the unexpected inauguration of Roosevelt. President William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901, and died on September 14. Roosevelt, who was told McKinley was expected to recover, was on a family vacation in upstate New York. He was inaugurated as the 26th President of the United States the same day in a private home in Buffalo. As part of the National Park Service, it offers an immersive and educational experience.

But There’s More…

Original Tiffany-stained glass windows at historic Trinity Episcopal Church. (Photo by Terri Guthrie)

The Tiffany Stained Glass Windows at Trinity Episcopal Church are spectacular to behold. The 21 large, unique windows tell beautiful Bible stories. Completed in the 1880s, this is one of three places in the world where artists John LaFarge and Louis Tiffany worked together. I went in the late afternoon and witnessed the windows’ vivid colors gradually change during sunset.

The Seneca Chief Canal Boat is a historic floating museum. It was the first boat to travel down the Erie Canal when it opened in 1825. This is a full-size replica of the original wooden boat. The Seneca Chief was built by devoted local volunteers to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal in 2025. This fascinating floating museum does a great job of transporting visitors to the beginnings of this epic waterway that led to America’s westward expansion.

I never knew Buffalo was this cool. This is not just a place to fly into on your way to Niagara Falls. It’s the wild Texish BBQ, the unexpected history, the distinctive local food, the outstanding architecture, the world-class art, the welcoming neighborhoods, and people. Buffalo is a city that’s been reimagined, revived, and resurrected. I can’t wait to return.

If You Go to Buffalo

Buffalo-Niagara International Airport is located 11 miles to the northeast of the city. Public nonstop bus services and Lyft, Uber, and taxi services are available. It’s also served by Amtrak rail service. Check out the Lake Shore Limited, Maple Leaf, and Empire Service.

Niagara Falls is one of the world’s top travel destinations and it has a legacy of being on everyone’s travel bucket list. It’s one of nature’s greatest wonders and I have wanted to go there for as long as I can remember. It’s also a four-season vacation destination with countless activities and attractions 365 days of the year. Named after the world-famous waterfalls, the city of Niagara Falls overlooks the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Crowned the “Honeymoon Capital of the World” and known as a world-famous wedding destination, it is synonymous with love and romance. In fact, this is where my parents had their honeymoon. To this day, Niagara Falls, Canada, is a sought-after location by couples worldwide who come from far and near to get married, renew their vows, enjoy their honeymoon, or experience an unforgettable romantic getaway. It’s no wonder Niagara Falls, Canada, made the list of ‘The 20 Most Romantic Places On The Planet.’

Romantic Rainbows

Rainbow sightings during the day in Niagara Falls have been surprising and delighting visitors for hundreds of years. On sunny days, seeing radiant rainbows over Niagara Falls as the mist hits the sunlight is a sensational sight. Niagara Falls is among the best places to see a rainbow on earth. This colorful natural phenomenon is guaranteed on any sunny day, which is frequent throughout the year, and even some cloudy days, making visits to Niagara Falls even more romantic.

Legendary Boat Rides

The big boat called Horn Blower, with Niagara City Cruises, gives the best experience on both sides of the border. In 1885, they started taking passengers to an up-close and personal view of the Horseshoe Falls, and it was an instant hit. This double-decker boat will take you to the center of the famous Horseshoe Falls. It’s fun and flirty, so hang on tight with that special someone because you will feel the exhilarating power of one of the world’s largest waterfalls. The heavy mist will surround you as the boat enters Horseshoe Falls and thundering water. Fortunately, rain ponchos are provided, because you will get wet. This is an iconic Niagara Falls experience and is not to be missed.

Romantic Restaurants

Niagara Falls has excellent options for romantic dining. AG Inspired Cuisine is one of the best and most unique culinary experiences. Their menu changes often, depending on what is harvested from their local garden that day, including honey. It doesn’t get any fresher and more creative than this. The interior of this restaurant is beautiful and sophisticated. AG Inspired Cuisine is a recipient of the CAA/AAA 4 Diamonds Award, OpenTable top 100 restaurants in Canada, and TripAdvisor’s 10 Best Niagara Falls Restaurants.

Inside the Old Stone Inn is the Flour Mill Scratch Kitchen Restaurant. This historic restaurant is inside an old flour mill that has been in Niagara Falls since 1904. The food, service, and cocktails at the Flour Mill Scratch Kitchen are excellent. The ambiance is warm, rustic, upscale, and romantic. Dignitaries who have dined here include Princess Diana and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau.

Trius Winery is a short drive away in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and it is well worth the drive. Trius Winery has been crafting wine for 40 years. In the chic and sexy Trius Winery Restaurant, we savored tantalizing gastronomy that is locally inspired. While there, visit Canada’s most extensive underground sparkling wine cellar and discover the iconic story of Trius Red in the barrel cellar. End your evening, as we did, by sipping champagne at the Trius Brut Bar patio.

Niagara Falls Power Station

One of the best new things to do in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side is the Niagara Falls Power Station. It doesn’t exactly sound romantic, but it has quickly become a fan favorite. We took a glass elevator down 180 feet to explore the first major Canadian power plant on the Niagara River. As the elevator doors opened, we walked the 2,200-foot-long tunnel that leads to an observation deck at the edge of the Niagara River. This is the perfect place for a kiss. The tunnel is a fantastic walkthrough of history and a feat of engineering. My engineer husband was certainly amazed and impressed. As you enter the observation platform, you’ll have up-close views of Canada’s Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls; it’s a surreal visual where you can literally feel the power of these magnificent Falls. At night, the Power Plant has a sound and light show that features an interactive light display set to music, and the illuminated Horseshoe Falls await. So, snuggle up because this nighttime encounter gives an entirely new way to experience this mighty natural wonder.

Helicopter Tour

Niagara Helicopters is an exciting way to experience Niagara Falls from an aerial viewpoint. This is your place if you’ve ever considered taking a helicopter tour. Tours are reasonable and well worth it. As you sit side by side, you’ll hear a commentary of all the sights as you gaze and fly over the breathtaking Niagara Gorge, Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the American Falls. At Niagara Helicopters – they even offer a Chapel in the Sky where you can say ‘I Do’ or renew your wedding vows. This helicopter ride provided us with an extraordinary view and perspective and was one of the highlights of our trip.

Nightly Fireworks

Create new memories by taking an evening walk, hand in hand, to enjoy the illuminated Falls and fireworks display. The fireworks here have been thrilling visitors to Niagara Falls for years with breathtaking displays overlooking the world-famous Falls. The spectacular fireworks show is set over the Falls and offers an exciting visual spectacle against the backdrop of the Falls. This is Canada’s longest-running fireworks series. The majestic Niagara Falls is illuminated every night of the year, making this destination among the world’s best places to see fireworks.

While in Niagara Falls, plan for sunsets, late-night adventures, and every moment in between for an unforgettable romantic getaway. It’s also spectacular to wake up to an incredible sunrise view over Niagara Falls. What a way to start your day.

It’s worth spending several days exploring the ‘Honeymoon Capital of the World’ because the list of fascinating things to experience is endless. Canada’s side of Niagara Falls should be a bucket-list destination no matter the season or age because this natural wonder is always remarkable, majestic, and romantic.

Can you imagine an unexpected presidential inauguration? That is precisely what happened when Theodore Roosevelt took his oath of office on September 14, 1901. The events that led to Roosevelt’s inauguration in a residence in Buffalo, New York, started at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. It was at this event that President William McKinley was fatally wounded. Today, you can visit Buffalo’s Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.

Preparing for a 21st-century presidential inauguration can take over a year. It’s typically an enormous celebration and social event for dignitaries and supporters from around the world. Extensive pageantry leads up to the big day with elegant balls, multiple parties, fireworks, rallies, and parades. The inaugural day follows government protocol with the swearing-in ceremony, inaugural address, and a grandiose presidential luncheon.

One hundred twenty-four years ago, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt had no pomp and circumstance for his presidential inauguration. It was quite the opposite. The ceremony was quickly arranged in the home of Roosevelt’s friend, Ansley Wilcox. This unlikely inauguration was when Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president – quietly in the parlor of a house in Buffalo, New York. There are not even any photos of Roosevelt being sworn in. The two photographers in the room where Roosevelt’s swearing-in ceremony was taking place got into a big argument and were promptly thrown out – therefore, no photographs exist documenting this historical moment.

Step back in time as you visit this historic site in Buffalo. This 1830s Wilcox house was pristinely restored to how it looked on September 14, 1901, when Theodore Roosevelt became the next president. This Inaugural Site marks one of American history’s most intriguing and improbable moments. It tells the story of a young man, just 42 years old and our youngest president to date, who was thrust into national prominence following the tragic assassination of President William McKinley. It’s a story that started with great tragedy and ended with one of the most influential U.S. Presidents of all time. You can experience it all at the Wilcox House, where Theodore Roosevelt was sworn into office, where the modern presidency began, and where a legend was introduced to the world.

Terri at Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.

The Theodore Roosevelt National Inaugural Site is a premier destination for regional, national, and international visitors. It’s a place that brings to life Theodore Roosevelt’s inauguration and his enduring legacy. The site is a place to learn, exchange ideas, and engage in civic discourse. It’s very thought-provoking as one begins to understand the essence of the issues faced by President Theodore Roosevelt and how these issues remain relevant today. Interpretive themes include immigration and urban poverty, race and social equality, environmental conservation, big business and labor, and the role of the U.S. in global affairs.

One of the things I enjoy most when traveling is finding little-known historical places. The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site was educational and truly fascinating. Seeing the historical rooms and interactive exhibits gave me a new perspective on the many issues Roosevelt faced during his presidency. When visiting Buffalo, I found countless historic places. The TR Site, as locals refer to it, is just one of many inspiring attractions you’ll find in the Buffalo Niagara region. The area is home to many historical landmarks, architectural treasures, summer festivals, art and performance centers, the natural wonder of Niagara Falls, and much more.

The site is open seven days a week and offers docent-led tours.  For more information, visit trsite.org. For things to do during your stay in Buffalo, visit Buffalo Niagara.

What a gift we have right here in North Texas. The Turtle Creek Chorale, an all men’s chorus group, has been serenading DFW audiences for over four decades. They are the most recorded male chorus in the world. That’s why, for the Turtle Creek Chorale’s annual traditional holiday concert series, they are taking a journey back to the WONDER of childhood Christmases.

The Turtle Creek Chorale’s Christmas Concert will transport you back to those cherished memories and so much more. This is a great multi-generational holiday production that everyone is sure to enjoy.

Here’s the TCC holiday schedule:

San Antonio is clearly one of the stars of Texas. It blends history with modern attractions, one-of-a-kind events, and some of the best food in the country. This is a must-visit city, but especially during Christmas. So, pack your bags for some big holiday fun!

San Antonio Holidays on Houston Street

In the heart of downtown San Antonio this festival evokes memories of Christmas past while inspiring new traditions for all. I loved the sights, smells, and sounds of this holiday festival. There is so much to see and do. November 29, 2024 – January 2, 2025, covers the entirety of the festival, Holidays on Houston Street. Throughout the thirty-five days, multiple events are scheduled, including the Holiday River Parade, Concerts, Outdoor Dinners, Shows, 5k Fun Runs, Boat Caroling, Trolley Light Tours, and more. San Antonio could not be more beautiful, with thousands of sparkling, twinkling Christmas lights and festive decorations. The biggest of these events is the Holidays on Houston Street Christmas Market. San Antonio Holidays on Houston Street (visitsanantonio.com)

December 13-15, 2024 – Holidays on Houston Street Christmas Market

This year’s Holidays on Houston Street Christmas Market celebration is set for December 13-15. It’s expected to be bigger and brighter, packed with more festivities, activities, and holiday cheer. Set along one of the city’s most historic and charming corridors, the event covers five blocks of Houston Street, from Broadway to Legacy Park. This is San Antonio’s rendition of an elevated European Christmas Market. We enjoyed curated artisan crafts, delicious holiday food and drinks, carolers’ music, and strolling entertainers. Be sure to stay for the ‘Holiday Lights in the Sky;’ this will captivate everyone. It’s a multiple drone show choreographed to holiday music that will light up the evening sky. The shows are nightly, during the Market, at 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.

There’s no need to go to Europe to see the Christmas Markets; you can have the same experience by just heading to San Antonio, which has that extra holiday sparkle. Holidays on Houston Street is perfect for a romantic getaway or a multi-generational Christmas vacation.

The Saga at San Fernando Cathedral

While in downtown San Antonio, stop by the historic San Fernando Cathedral, known as the heart of the city. It was founded in 1731 by a group of families from the Canary Islands at the invitation of King Phillip V of Spain. This beautiful cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Texas and the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the United States. It is a significant part of the city’s religious and cultural heritage. Every evening, you can experience an awe-inspiring video art projection called “The Saga,” which shares the story of land, people, battle, water, the development of San Antonio, the Lone Star State, and United States history. This 24-minute journey of artistic projection covers 7,000 square feet, the entire majestic façade of the San Fernando Cathedral. The Saga will fill your senses and imagination with music, light, color and visual narration. It is free and runs every half hour. The Saga is an artistic masterpiece that is visually magnificent. San Antonio River Walk

Of course, the legendary San Antonio River Walk is always special to see, but know it is absolutely magical during the holidays. This famous landmark is iconic and features vibrant culture, captivating history, and endless charm. The famous River Walk sits below street level and is very picturesque. It is lined with lively bars and great restaurants, shaded by giant bald cypress trees and quaint stone-arched bridges. When the city celebrates, it usually takes place at the River Walk. There are numerous unique boat parades throughout the year. One of the best and most beautiful times to experience the River Walk is during the holidays when illuminated boats are full of Christmas Carolers. The spectacular display of over 100,000 colorful lights hangs throughout the massive cypress trees, reflecting in the river water, making the entire area enchanting and mesmerizing. The only thing better than strolling along the River Walk is enjoying it from the river itself. Take a dinner cruise as we did with Go Rio. It’s now one of our favorite and most memorable dining experiences. The views were spectacular, the food and drinks were delicious, and the guides were entertaining as they shared the history of River Walk with a wealth of knowledge and humor. Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel

There are many lodging options and accommodations in the Alamo City. The four-diamond Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel is a perfect place to stay in downtown San Antonio during the holidays. It’s nestled along the historic River Walk and blends Spanish colonial architecture and European style for an unforgettable retreat. Ideally situated, you can easily explore all of San Antonio’s extensive range of tourist attractions. The Spanish Colonial style offers distinctive charm with beamed ceilings, exposed brick walls, marble baths, and modern conveniences. It reminds me of a luxury hacienda. Guest rooms feature balconies with sweeping views of the River Walk, while others offer views of the year-round pool and lush courtyard. The hotel’s upscale guest rooms and suites celebrate the romance and history of the picturesque River Walk. Omni La Mansión Del Rio | San Antonio River Walk Hotels (omnihotels.com)

Mokara Spa and Four Brothers Southern Provisions

If you feel like being pampered, book one of the soothing treatments at the Omni’s Mokara Spa. Here, you can indulge in an elegant and luxurious escape to recharge. Popular services include hot-stone massages, thermal mud wraps, anti-aging facials, Swedish-style services, and moisturizing facials. For a bite to eat, try Omni’s Four Brothers restaurant. It offers delicious food and drink and highly desired riverfront dining. One of the more popular dishes on the Four Brothers menu is authentic chili con carne, made from the traditional recipe; it even comes with a massive serving of cornbread baked in the shape of Texas. Four Brothers Southern Provisions

Historic Market Square

If you want to immerse yourself in the sights and flavors of old Mexico, you must visit Historic Market Square. It’s the largest Mexican market in the United States. This three-block plaza in downtown San Antonio was a gift from the King of Spain to the original settlers in the 1700s. It has been a favorite of locals and tourists for generations as it bustles with activities and celebrations. Historic Market Square – City of San Antonio

Historic Market Square is especially charming during Christmas and an excellent place for all generations. Relax at the Farmers Market Food Court and enjoy a show on the nearby stage. Or dine at the famous Mi Tierra or La Margarita restaurants for authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. Here, you will have a San Antonio signature dining experience. I was surprised to find over 100 locally owned businesses and south-of-the-border shops providing a traditional Colonial Mexican marketplace. With all the multicultural merchandise, it’s a great place to shop and find that perfect souvenir. You can also enjoy live music and entertainment. Mariachi bands are known to turn the entire into a mini fiesta. Historic Market Square is especially festive and fun at Christmas, as it’s covered with holiday decorations, twinkling lights, and an enormous outdoor Christmas tree. Also, if you look hard enough, you might just find Santa Claus and some of his helpers. This unique destination is where the culture of San Antonio comes alive. https://lafamiliacortez.com/mi-tierra/

La Margarita – La Familia Cortez

San Antonio is a gem and is the perfect place to enrich and elevate your Christmas holidays, Texas-style! So, pack your excitement and prepare for an enchanting experience that will leave you excited and wanting more. San Antonio is your passport to an unforgettable holiday vacation!

Springfield, Missouri is in the heart of the Ozarks and is a must-stop! In fact, I would plan on staying for several days in Springfield because there is so much to do and see. Whatever brings you to the “Show-Me State,” be sure to Stop in Springfield because it is filled with unique, impressive, and memorable attractions, from the Ozarks’ natural beauty to the vibrancy of a metropolitan city. I was totally unaware of how much Springfield has to offer, and I regret that I have driven right through this city many times while on road trips. I will not make that mistake again.

Springfield, Missouri, the birthplace of Route 66, is steeped in history that predates even the Civil War. It has a rich tapestry of local history that will captivate all ages. The city has a wealth of interactive museums that bring history to life. While it’s an outdoor lover’s dream, plenty of places also bring nature indoors—for example, the countless taxidermy and water features found at the original Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. Most of Springfield’s businesses are locally owned and operated by people who love and live in the Missouri Ozarks.

Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World

This is the world’s first and largest Bass Pro Shop—the granddaddy of all outdoor stores! It’s enormous and has an abundance of family-friendly wildlife, attractions, and amenities. This is not just a store—it’s an experience and a “must-see” when visiting the Ozarks.

At 500,000 square feet, this massive store focuses on the beauty of the outdoors and the immersive shopping experience. In fact, this creative outdoor-themed store has become the number one tourist destination in the entire state of Missouri. While everything inside the Bass Pro Shop is free to the public, the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium is a standout attraction that is well worth the price of admission. It is the world’s largest immersive wildlife attraction and a must-see for any nature lover.

This enormous complex offers everything listed below, plus more… and shopping galore. Visitors can easily spend an entire day or more at Bass Pro Shops Headquarters in Springfield.

Fish Café, Hemingway’s Blue Water Café, Black Rifle Coffee Company, National Archery Hall of Fame, Morris Conservation Education Center. Angler’s Lodge, The American Museum of Fly Fishing, National Rifle Association Sporting Arms Museum, Bass Pro Shops Motorsports Museum, Wonders of Wildlife National Museum, and Aquarium.

The Cave State

Fun tram ride through Fantastic Caverns.

Missouri is known as the Cave State. Amazingly, it has more than 7,500 recorded caves.  Many may ask why there are so many caves in this one state. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says, “Many areas of the state are underlain by soluble carbonate bedrock, such as limestone or dolomite, that can be easily dissolved by water. Slightly acidic rainwater filters into the ground and enters cracks and joints found in the bedrock, slowly dissolving it away. In time, the groundwater enlarges these passages to form caves. The water moving through caves can deposit minerals from the dissolved rock, creating speleothems, or cave formations.”

Several of the caves in Missouri are accessible to those with mobility issues. Fantastic Caverns in Springfield was perfect for small children because it is the only cave in North America with a complete ride-through tour. The tour lasts 55 minutes, and guests travel in a comfortable tram pulled by a Jeep. The trams drive along an ancient underground dried river bed. This cave has a fascinating history; for example, twelve ladies were considered the first explorers of the cave. You can see where they carved their names into a rock inside the cave in 1867. Also, Fantastic Caverns was used as a speakeasy during prohibition, and for decades, musical concerts were hosted here.

Smallin Civil War Cave looking out through the enormous natural opening.

Smallin Civil War Cave was discovered in 1818. The introductory tour is just a half-mile, has no stairs, and can accommodate those in wheelchairs. Seasonally, Civil War Lantern Tours are conducted around a campfire with stories and a Southern meal followed by a lantern light trip through the cave. Smallin Civil War Cave has a breathtaking ten-story arch opening. As you enter, this cave will lead you into fascinating human history, unusual geology, and rare cave life. It is listed as a Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places.

Route 66 Car Museum

Route 66 Car Museum

This was a fun stop. The 20,000-square-foot Route 66 Car Museum is located along the famed and historic Mother Road and offers a walk-through of automotive history. This private collection spans 100 years of classic vehicles from 1907 to 2007. Chances are good you won’t see many of these models on the road. There are even some famous movie cars like Batman’s 1979 Gotham Cruiser and the 1991 Ghost Busters Ectomobile. This impressive car collection is a popular destination for history buffs and classic car enthusiasts. Naturally, Springfield hosts the annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival each August.

Accommodations

Signature V at Hotel Vandivort.

Springfield offers over 6,000 hotel rooms at every price point, from boutique hotels to bed and breakfasts. We stayed at the beautiful Hotel Vandivort, a former Masonic temple. This posh boutique hotel features 98 spacious guest rooms with modern amenities. The Vantage Rooftop Lounge is lovely, with great views of the historic downtown area. The Order Food and Drink is inside the large hotel lobby, an outstanding fine-dining restaurant and bar with a gourmet menu and excellent handcrafted seasonal cocktails and mocktails. This restaurant is small but big on taste, offering local American fare and a fresh take on Midwestern cuisine. Hotel Vandivort is chicly elegant yet still has that small-town charm.

Celebrities

Considering that Springfield, Missouri, is not that big…with a population of just 170,067, the list of celebrities from Springfield is extensive. For example, Movie Stars Brad Pitt, Bob Barker, Lucas Grabeel, John Goodman, Kathleen Turner, and Cailee Spaeny. Brenda Lee, Singer; and Janet L. Kavandi, American Astronaut. Plus, Johnny Morris, founder and owner of Bass Pro Shops; Payne Stewart, Professional Golfer; Anthony Tolliver, NBA player; and even Jerry Jones, owner of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, to name a few.

Springfield may be an underrated city, but it does an outstanding job of combining urban amenities with small-town hospitality. Nestled in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, Springfield offers so much to keep visitors entertained, educated, and excited about their visit, with fascinating attractions and a thriving culinary scene. It’s the perfect destination for all ages, family vacations, or romantic escapes any time of the year.… that is why you should Stop in Springfield!

Car enthusiasts, rev up your motors for the ideal start to an exciting and unique trip to Germany. If you are a fan of German cars, you’ll love the Automobile Region of Southwest Germany. It’s a mecca for car lovers, known as the Motorworld Region in the capital city of Stuttgart, surrounded by the wine hills of the Württemberg wine region. This unique European trip idea really piqued our interest. Whether it’s your first trip to Germany or you’ve traveled there multiple times, focusing on the automobile region and aspect will surely add a fun twist and turn to any vacation.

Start your tour at the Automobile Center of Stuttgart. Here, they have workshops, retail stores, service providers, restaurants, conference rooms, and even event areas for up to 1,000 guests. Also, you’ll find theme exhibitions for lovers of classic vehicles, sports cars, and motorcycles. After a guided tour, Gottlieb Daimler’s birthplace is the perfect place to start delving into automotive history. In 1886, Daimler presented his motor carriage, the world’s first four-wheeled automobile. His ideas were all technological milestones and were realized with Wilhelm Maybach in his workshop. Today, this workshop is the site of the Gottlieb Daimler Memorial. Models of the engines and tools used are on display.

Next stop at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. On average, visitors cover almost 1.5 miles on their journey through more than 130 years of automotive history. The museum’s interior is modeled on a double helix: two circular tours lead through the extensive collections from top to bottom. The first tour focuses on the history of the automobile, while the second presents the diversity of the brand profile.

The 911 Porsche Turbo is celebrating 50 years (photo by Ron Guthrie)

Complete your day at the Porsche Museum. It’s next to the company headquarters building. The exterior of the building is a veritable feast for the eyes. The spectacular access from the foyer to the extensive exhibition area takes visitors into the museum’s interior with the chronological documentation of the products and the brand. Various tours can be booked. In front of the Porsche Museum, there’s an optical landmark, an eighty-foot sculpture with three pillars topped by a different Porsche 911 model.

The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany (courtesy photo)

Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Porsche Turbo with a special exhibition that will be open until January 12, 2025. No other model reflects the company’s innovative strength as much as the Turbo derivatives. The first production 911 Turbo was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1974. In typical Porsche fashion, this technology migrated from racing to series production.

Sleep in a car at the creative V8 Hotel (courtesy photo)

For accommodations, keep the motor theme going. The two V8 Hotels are perfectly connected to the Stuttgart Automotive Region. At these 4-star hotels, guests can choose between standard rooms and individually designed theme rooms, all geared to the classic car ambiance of Motorworld. As they say, “Two houses, one sports dream, all in the middle of the Motorworld Region of Stuttgart.” All car enthusiasts should be in motor heaven here!

There is never a shortage of things to do and see in the DFW Metroplex. But have you thought of putting Frisco, Texas, on your list of places to explore? Did you know it has long been known as Sports City USA? For businesses, sports fans and family fun, it’s a top destination. Frisco has also been getting attention in numerous national magazines, making it on the list as the Fastest Rising City, Best Sports Business City, one of the Safest Cities in the USA, and one of the World’s Best Places to Travel. But what truly sets Frisco apart is its diverse range of activities, from sports to music, festivals, museums, art, and awesome activities. It has beautiful new parks, incredible accommodations, and a fantastic food scene. If you are looking for a diverse and exciting travel experience, then head on over to Frisco, only a short 30-minute drive east of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

There are not too many little farm towns that have bragging rights like Frisco. Today, this city is unrecognizable from the original town that was founded and named after the St. Louis San Francisco Railroad, which ran through it in the early 1900s. After a few name changes, Frisco’s official name was determined, and this tiny farming community was officially incorporated in 1908. Two years later, the population of Frisco was recorded at 332. Fast forward to last year, and the population was recorded as 231,115, which is a staggering 69,600 percent population increase. This rapid growth has transformed Frisco into a vibrant and dynamic city, ready to be explored.

Today, Frisco is a city on the rise, with its growth and vitality showing no signs of slowing down. And, as I’ve discovered, it’s a great place to visit for many reasons.

Frisco Sports Teams

If you’re a sports enthusiast, Frisco is the place to be. The city boasts year-round professional sports and unique attractions, including the National Soccer Hall of Fame. With its vibrant sports culture, Frisco is a must-visit for any sports fan.

Texas home teams who play or train in Frisco include:

  • The Dallas Cowboys
  • NHL’s Dallas Stars
  • Texas Rangers AA affiliate
  • Frisco RoughRiders
  • Dallas Mavericks affiliate – Texas Legends
  • NBA G League
  • Frisco Fighters – an indoor football team
  • Frisco Pandas, a Major League Pickleball
  • And a year ago, the National PGA Headquarters moved to Frisco

Top things to see in Frisco

The list is endless, but here are a few of my top picks:

Omni PGA Frisco Resort in Frisco Texas Sports City USA. Courtesy photo

*PGA of America Headquarters and Omni PGA Frisco Resort

PGA of America is one of the largest sports organizations on the globe and they just moved their world headquarters to Frisco. The PGA is composed of more than 30,000 trained golf professionals who work to grow interest and participation in the game. For more than 100 years, they’ve worked to elevate the game of golf in the USA and around the globe, by sponsoring premier spectator events, such as the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and Women’s PGA Championship, just to name a few. This place is a golf enthusiast’s dream. It boasts a two-acre putting course, a 10-hole par-three course, and two championship 18-hole golf courses.

This unique, hands-on experience delivers high-tech services to golfers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, and offer diverse programming inside the PGA Coaching Center. It’s personally crafted to meet golfers at every stage of their golfing journey.

There’s also the Fields Ranch Practice Facility, which is almost 30 acres, with areas for private PGA member use. And of course, a Pro Shop where you can find official merchandise from the PGA and its events. The two-acre Ronny is designed specifically with junior golfers in mind. Each October, you can watch the best young golfers from across the country compete at the PGA Frisco.

The outdoor PGA District is a great place to hang out, where you’ll find a variety of signature dining and retail shops. Plus, they have virtual game experiences and live entertainment. The District also has the Dance Floor putting course, the Swing 10-hole par, the Ice House, and the Lounge by Topgolf.

Could it get any better? Well, it does. There is the beautiful new Omni PGA Frisco Resort. This family-friendly, 500-room resort is all about golf. It offers 13 dining options, Mokara, a world-class spa, four pools, and an adults-only rooftop infinity pool. All just steps away from PGA World Headquarters.

*The Star District

The Star District is now the Dallas Cowboys’ World Headquarters and practice facility, covering a 91-acre entertainment district. This is the brainchild of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. This one-of-a-kind complex allows fans to connect with the Cowboys in ways they have never imagined, including the opportunity to watch this legendary team practice!

Connected to the World Corporate Headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys, the Ford Center is comprised of a multi-purpose, 12,000-seat indoor stadium, as well as the entire Dallas Cowboys football operations and practice fields. The indoor stadium at the Ford Center provides a state-of-the-art facility, which is used by the Cowboys and is also the venue for many events — including the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys: Terri Guthrie©

New at the Star is a brand-new, high-tech exhibit: an interactive technology-driven hologram featuring Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones. You honestly feel like he’s real, and asking Mr. Jones questions is fun. This is one area that does not allow photography, but we sure enjoyed it.

The Star District is a must-see when visiting Frisco. It’s intriguing, unique, and the perfect place to enjoy premieres, dining, shopping, events, and entertainment.

*National Soccer Hall of Fame

This is the ultimate soccer experience. The National Soccer Hall of Fame is where they honor the past while fully incorporating modern technology of the present and future, using virtual reality, gesture technology, and interactive digital video boards. This fascinating modern technology is used throughout to celebrate the players, veterans, and builders of American soccer who elevated the sport to where it is today. It features interactive exhibits along with iconic soccer memorabilia and serves as the home for Hall of Fame induction ceremonies each year.

*KidZania and Hyatt Regency

The beautiful Hyatt Regency is in an excellent location with easy access to all the fun places to see in Frisco. But one of the best things of all is that it’s conveniently attached to Frisco’s Stonebriar Centre Mall, which features 200 shops and restaurants. Inside Stonebriar is KidZania, and this is not to be missed if you have kids. It’s the only one in North America and is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

KidZania is an expertly created, real-life city with real-life sponsors designed to inspire, educate, and empower kids through immersive learning experiences. More than 100 hands-on activities allow kids to role-play and let their imaginations run wild! Kids can become different authentic professionals, such as firefighters, doctors, news anchors, robotics engineers, police officers, chefs, astronauts, secret agents, or airline pilots.

KidZania Aviation Academy: Terri Guthrie©

The Aviation Academy is a huge hit. The KidZania International Airport is the largest area inside KidZania. It has a real American Airlines Jet that kids can explore with multiple rooms, flight simulators, and training, all in the plane’s fuselage. My husband Ron, a retired commercial airline captain, was very impressed. He said, “You could actually learn to fly here with KidZania’s authentic equipment.” I had a hard time getting him away from the flight simulator. KidZania is a fun and learning experience for kids and adults!

*Frisco Public Library

Typically, a library would not be at the top of my list, but you’ve got to see this place. It’s the sixth-largest library in Texas and is so much more than books. When you enter, you’ll be greeted by a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex named “Rexy.” This state-of-the-art library provides innovative programs and events for children and adults, as well as current books, movies, music, and emerging technology. Their mission is to inspire intellect, curiosity, and imagination! The fun and possibilities are endless.

*Historic Rail District

The Heritage Table Restaurant in the Rail District: Terri Guthrie©

All aboard for the heart of Frisco. The historic Rail District was once full of farmers, ranchers, horses, and wagons. Today, it’s still a gathering place for locals and visitors and is home to an eclectic group of independent businesses, restaurants, and so much more, where you can experience local art, music, fun, and more! This is where Frisco celebrates most of their annual festivals and events. They have something going on every month of the year. I am thrilled to have discovered the Heritage Table Restaurant tucked away in the Rail District. What a hidden gem. It’s in an unassuming one-hundred-year-old Victorian farmhouse that was converted into a charming restaurant on Main Street. The meal was excellent, and the fresh farm-to-table dishes were made with wonderful quality ingredients. Chef and owner Rich Vana uses local farm produce and truly brings their dishes to the next level.

Coming soon to Frisco

Frisco offers endless wonderful things to do and see for all ages. And they aren’t slowing down — looking ahead, numerous projects are currently under construction or in the works, including more shopping and dining options, new hotels, attractions, and mixed-use developments.

Just a few of the new noteworthy Frisco projects include:

*Universal Kid’s Resort

Universal Kid’s Resort broke ground in 2023. This imaginative, original resort brings Universal’s creative storytelling style specifically for families with young children.

*The Dallas Open

The Dallas Open is a unique partnership between GF Sports & Entertainment and the Dallas Cowboys. This sports event will bring the franchise known worldwide for football into the arena of professional tennis. With its recently announced upgrade to an ATP 500-level tournament, the Dallas Open will bring pro tennis players from around the world to Ford Center at The Star in Frisco — the Dallas Cowboys’ World Corporate Headquarters and Training Facility — starting in 2025.

Frisco is truly fascinating! It offers fun for the whole family in a safe and playful setting with year-round professional sports action, family attractions, beautiful hotels, and nine- million square feet of retail and restaurant options. This once-little farm town is very big in many ways and is now one of the hottest travel destinations in the nation.

The first time I went to Dubai, all I could think about was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz saying, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates and is quiet unique, yet very impressive. It’s known to be one of the most interesting and fastest-growing cities on earth!

Over a very short period, this desert city has transformed itself from a humble pearl-diving village into an international hub for tourism and trade and is now a gateway between the East and the West. The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in this booming city of over 3.7 million people. Back in 1950, the population of Dubai was just 20,000.

Some of the things we enjoyed while in Dubai are:

Tour “Dubai Creek” in an “Abra” and see outstanding views of the city’s futuristic and traditional architecture. An Abra is wooden row boat that looks ancient, but are now powered by diesel engines and can seat about 20 people.

Shop ‘til you drop and stroll through the endless maze of Souks (markets) and Malls. The Spice and Gold Souks are not to be missed. Amazingly, there are over 50 shopping malls in full operation and many more under construction. My favorite is Dubai Mall which has over 1,200 retail shops. It’s one of the largest malls in the world. On an earlier trip, my husband, Ron, even went “snowboarding” inside the Mall of the Emirates at their ski resort. It features a 200-foot-tall man made mountain and five slopes of varying difficulty— including the world’s first indoor black run…in a desert, no less.

Have some fun walking around Dubai just people watching. We saw many people smoking ‘Shisha’, which is a very social and popular thing to do there. Another local name for it is ‘Hubbly Bubbly’, and it has a sweet, fruity smell. Shisha is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water. The tobacco is heated by charcoal at the top and inhaled through a water chamber at the bottom. Shisha pipes date back over 500 years in the Middle East.

No trip to Dubai would be complete without a visit to “Burj Khalifa’, the tallest building in the world. There is an observation deck on the 124th floor called ‘At The Top´ and on a clear day, the views over the city are amazing. While you’re in the area, visit the Dubai Fountain and see the free spectacular water and music show. I was completely captivated by the spectacle of lights and movement of the water.

There are also many wonderful coffee shops and restaurants nearby. We enjoyed dinner at Sammach, an excellent Lebanese seafood restaurant that has a fantastic view of these magnificent dancing fountains.

Most everyone has heard of Dubai’s ‘Artificial Islands’ but we had to see it to actually believe it. In the Persian Gulf, three man-made islands are in the shape of palm fronds and consist of luxury hotels and residences, restaurants, water parks, and sports facilities. Our favorite spot is the stunning Atlantis Palm Hotel. It features guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass views of their fabulous Lost Chambers Aquarium. Literally from your bed, you are surrounded by an enormous aquarium where you can watch sea creatures swim around you until fall asleep.

Consider a short day trip – we went on a fun Desert Safari Tour. I don’t know when we’ve laughed more. We really enjoyed an exhilarating drive over huge red and gold sand dunes, camel rides, and a Bedouin Camp for an evening feast while being entertained by belly dancers. We even got a “temporary” henna tattoo which is very popular in the UAE.

Dine at sunset in one of the many excellent restaurants on the waterways in the shadow of the magnificent ‘7-star’ Burj Al Arab Hotel. On my next trip, I hope to have High Tea there. As a hotel guest, you can be picked up at the airport in a Rolls Royce or, perhaps, a helicopter. It is the self-proclaimed most luxurious hotel in the world. The Burj Al Arab is also one of the world’s tallest hotels and is designed to look like a sailboat. Everything is over the top here…guests are even presented with a gold-plated 24-caret iPad worth $9,000 when they arrive.

This Arabian oasis is clearly an exotic place with enormous wealth. Dubai is very clean, very safe with almost no crime, a great education system, up-to-date healthcare facilities, modern infrastructure…and everything is tax-free.

I can certainly say Dubai is a great destination where you will truly have one of the best and most authentic cultural experiences imaginable.
