In a game that seemed to go almost in slow motion in the beginning, the Marcus Marauders kept the lead throughout the Mound Showdown.
For much of the game, the score remained 7-0 until the fourth quarter when Marcus kicked a field goal and scored a second touchdown, bringing the score to 17-0 with only minutes remaining. Flower Mound scored its first touchdown, bringing the score to 17-7 until Marcus took the ball to the end zone again for a 24-7 score. Flower Mound came back with a second touchdown, leaving the final score at 24-14 in what turned out to be quite a bit of action in the final quarter.
Liberty Christian and Bishop Lynch kept the action going, trading leads throughout the night’s game and at one point early in the fourth tying the game at 24-24. Then Liberty Christian scored two touchdowns, pulling ahead by the game’s end to 37-24.
Denton Guyer Wildcats took the lead quickly and kept it against Justin Northwest, which valiantly tried to come back but fell short, leaving the score 43-33 with a Guyer win.
Marcus 24, Flower Mound 14
Marcus edged out Flower Mound in the annual Battle of the Mound game which saw both teams fail to score in both the second and third quarters.
Andrew Parish hit Alex Albright on a 42-yard pass to open things up in the game for the Marauders, but Marcus was the only team to score in the first quarter of play, and the score remained 7-0 Marcus heading into the fourth quarter.
Daniel Blaney drilled a 32-yard field goal for Marcus in the fourth, and Albright had a 39-yard run for the Marauders.Chase
Lembke got things going for Flower Mound in the fourth, scoring on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter, but Nate Hopkins came right back with a touchdown for Marcus.
Colton Pennington scored on a 31-yard fumble return for Flower Mound, but the Jaguars could not complete the comeback.
Flower Mound will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lewisville High School.
Marcus will host Plano West at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Liberty Christian 37, Bishop Lynch 24
A strong fourth quarter helped the Liberty Christian football team to a 37-24 win Friday night against Bishop Lynch.
A Lynch field goal was the only score in the first quarter. However, Nick Starkel connected with Hunter Griffith on a 29-yard touchdown pass to put the Warriors up in the second quarter.
Bishop Lynch answered with a touchdown of its own, but Liberty came right back when Starkel hit Cole Irwin on a one-yard pass to make it 14-10 at the half with the Warriors leading.
Starkel and Griffith joined forces again in the third quarter with a 67-yard touchdown pass, though it followed two Lynch touchdowns, Liberty was then trailing by three points into the fourth quarter.
Liberty Christian scored 16 unanswered fourth-quarter points to clinch the win, including a 24-yard field goal from Cole Austin, along with another touchdown pass to Griffith from Starkel (63 yards) as well as a 26-yard pass from Starkel to Drew Hunnicutt.
Starkel threw five touchdown passes against Bishop Lynch and Griffith rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
Liberty will play at 7 p.m. on Friday at Midland Christian.
Denton Guyer 43, Justin Northwest 33
Guyer quarterback Shawn Robinson threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns passes on Friday night as the Wildcats defeated Northwest by a score of 43-33 at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Guyer scored first in the game when a tipped pass from Shawn Robinson found its way into the hands of Wildcats receiver Alex Honey for a 75-yard touchdown score.
Guyer scored again two drives later on a 1-yard run from David Rolon, and two-point conversion pass to David Haynes from Robinson.
Following a Northwest field goal, Guyer came right back on its next drive and scored on a 37-run from Robinson and his two point pass to Honey.
Guyer picked up where it left off in the second half after a 41-yard touchdown run was called back for the Wildcats on an illegal block.
Honey and Robinson hooked up on the very next play on a 51-yard pass to extend Guyer’s lead. Honey finished the night with 152 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
Northwest answered with a touchdown pass, then Rolon (151 yards, two touchdowns) scored on his second 1-yard touchdown run of the night on Guyer’s next drive, and after getting the ball back, the Wildcats scored again on a seven yard pass to David Haynes from Robinson.
Just when it appeared that Guyer had the game in hand, however, Drummer hit Moore on two quick touchdown passes of 49 and 37 yards respectively to make it a two score game once again.
Guyer was able to run the clock out to hang on for the victory on the final drive of the game.
The Wildcats will host Keller Fossil Ridge at 7 p.m. on Friday at C.H. Collins.
