Week 2 of Friday night football in southern Denton County kicked off with a strong start with wins all around for Guyer, Argyle, Liberty Christian, Flower Mound and Marcus teams.
Argyle and Liberty Christian handily won each of their games, taking early leads and broadening the gap between their scores and those of their opponents.
It was touch and go for awhile for the Guyer Wildcats who finished with a winning field goal to make their season 1-1. The Flower Mound Jaguars also played a close game against Keller, kicking two field goals in the fourth quarter against its opponent’s single field goal to take the win.
And though it looked grim in the first quarter, the Marcus Marauders kicked into gear, taking and keeping the lead to a final win.
The following offers highlights of the games:
Argyle 42, Denison 35
The Argyle football team improved to 2-0 on Friday with a 42-35 victory over Denison in a game that saw 42 fourth quarter points.
After trailing 7-0 early, Gage McCook scored on a 6-yard run late in the first quarter to tie it up at seven for Argyle. The Eagles then took the lead when McCook rushed for his second touchdown of the night, but Denison tied it up late in the second quarter and the game was 14-14 at the half.
Cooper Rodgers regained the lead for Argyle on a 4-yard run in the third quarter, and then Nick Ralston rushed for touchdown runs of one and three yards in the fourth.Ralston rushed for 146 yards in the game.
The Yellow Jackets managed to tie it up with under a minute to play, but with 26 seconds left in the game, Rodgers connected with Dane Ledford on a 56-yard touchdown pass to seal the victory for Argyle.
The Eagles will host Celina at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
Liberty Christian 54, Springtown, 20
Nick Starkel passed for 297 yards and five touchdowns on Friday night, as the Liberty Christian football team handily defeated Springtown 54-20 in Argyle.
Starkel hit Drew Hunnicutt on a 15-yard touchdown pass to start the game before the Porcupines tied it up in the first quarter.
For the next two quarters, it was all Liberty Christian, as the Warriors scored 47 unanswered points between the second and third periods.
Starkel connected with Justus Lee on passes of 64 and 76 yards, Jalen Hurt on an 8-yard pass and Hunnicutt on his second touchdown of the night, this time of 22 yards.
The Warriors’ running game came through as well, as Ryan Vollenhals and John Copeland scored on runs of 39 yards and 37 yards respectively.
Vollenhals finished the night with 107 yards rushing.Liberty Christian improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory, and will be at home again at 7:30 p.m. next Friday to host Melissa.
Guyer 45, Ennis 42
The Guyer football team came out on top of a see-saw affair with Ennis on Friday night in a game that featured six lead changes.
Ennis took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, before Alex Honey cut the deficit in half for the Wildcats on a 34-yard touchdown reception from Shawn Robinson.
The Lions extended their lead to 14 again in the second quarter, before Robinson scored on a run of 19 yards and Anthony Taylor scored on a 10-yard run.
Guyer took its first lead of the night in the third quarter, when Adam Scott caught a 37-yard pass from Robinson, but 14 unanswered points from Ennis put Guyer behind again.
The Wildcats tied the game up once again late in the third on Taylor’s second touchdown run of the night, but Ennis regained the lead early in the fourth quarter.
Robinson rushed for a 35-yard touchdown with 4:38 left to play to tie the game up, and kicker Anthony Terzini drilled a 33-yard game winning field goal in the waning seconds to put the game away.
Guyer moved to 1-1 on the season with the victory and will be home at 7:30 p.m. next Friday against Wichita Falls Rider.
Flower Mound 19, Keller 17
The Flower Mound football team evened its season record at 1-1 following a back and forth battle on Friday night to defeat Keller by
a score of 19-17.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Jaguars got down 8-0 in the second, before Logan Davis scored on an 8-yard tun to make it 8-6.In the third quarter,
Flower Mound took the lead on an 8-yard pass from Davis to Freddie
Jackson.Keller came right back however and took a 1-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The only scoring in the fourth quarter was on field goals, as Flower Mound’s Richard Kelly kicked two at distances of 39 yards and 32 yards, while Keller only kicked one.
The Jags will travel to Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium in Plano at 7:30 p.m. next Friday to take on Plano East.
Marcus 39, Arlington 17
Things did not look good for Marcus at the end of the first quarter on Friday night, as Arlington had just scored on a 79-yard run to take a 10-7 lead.
But the Marauders settled down and improved to 1-1 on the season with an impressive victory over the always game Arlington Colts.
Nate Hopkins scored on an 11-yard run and Jay Mack scored on a 1-yard run to give Marcus a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Marauders pulled away in the third quarter, as Cade Erwin, AndrewParrish and C.J. Respass scored on runs of 6, 5 and 21 yards respectively to give Marcus a 36-10 lead.
Kent Depwe kicked a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Marcus, as well.
The Marauders will open district with a homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. next Friday against Lewisville.
